Maren mourns Aravel – The Errant King |
There’s just something about the soft whisper of a pencil on paper…It’s so relaxing. It helps me think. I guess that’s why I’ve always loved to sketch.
Not so much places or people I’ve seen, but those I’ve pictured in my head while reading a good book. Pictures translated from words.
I rarely draw my own characters. I’m not entirely sure why. After all, I imagined them, so I should be able to capture them in pencil as well as in ink. Still, for some reason, I always put it off and crack open another book instead, and grant form to another author’s creations.
Perhaps next time, I’ll have some pictures of my own characters to show you, but for now, here are some of my latest drawings of characters from Wayne Thomas Batson’s Dark Sea Annals series.
Our scanner is unfortunately broken, so I beg you pardon the photo quality as I was forced to take pictures of the drawings.

Anyone else like to sketch characters? Do you prefer to sketch your own characters or characters from books you’ve read?

Wow, those sketches are amazing! If i had any remote skill with a pencil I'd draw everything – my characters, my friends' characters, favourite characters from series and TV shows, parody comics …. *sigh* If only I weren't artistically deficient in the highest meaning of the word :(

Stunning, absolutely stunning. You are an amazing artist!
Telwyn looks so much like Aragorn from Lord of the Rings, it's eerie…funny thing is, that's exactly as I imagined him. XD
Again, great job!!!

I've sketched a few of my own characters, but I admit they aren't as good as your sketches. My sense of perspective is a little medieval.
I haven't read the book in question, but there's something about Lochlan that captures me. There seems to be a great deal of fire and power behind those eyes. Keep sketching!

Wow you have some amazing art talent! :) Such beautiful work!!!

I love Alastair, and Cythraul. Fantastic!
Telwyn, ironically, reminds me of a western-style Jesus…

Beautiful, Gillian. I especially like that dragon. ^_^
I like to draw characters, but mostly from other people's books… unless they are creatures. Creatures, I can do from my own books. My MC's… not so much. lol!

Thanks! Y'all are all so sweet.
Eru – Haha. Telwyn is actually probably my least favorite of the drawings…he didn't turn out quite as I had pictured him. :)
@ Jake – Wow. That's funny!
@ Star-Dreamer – Odd, isn't it? I've never been able to sit down and draw my MC's either. And I find that I'll write much more indepth descriptions of other characters and leave the main character descriptions a little more vague… I guess it's so the reader can "own" the character a bit. Give just enough detail so they can picture him/her…

These really are marvelous. Well done. You've captured quite a bit of the heart of each character. I love the perspective of the Cythraul pic. Tel's eyes are amazing. Very nice indeed.

I didn't know you were an artist with the pen in another sense. :) These are quite gorgeous. Just curious. Is there a certain style you use predominantly? How long did it take you to do each one? I do not sketch too much but I have cartooned alot as a kid and once every three months I butcher the chalkboard. Drawing a poster for Karis's campain last week was awesome. Sun and mooned themed swords clashing between the sunrise and darkness. But one of her friends lost the poster. A chance to do it better a second time i suppose. :D
