I’ve long been fascinated by the idea of having a hobbit birthday. I thought it would be so much fun! So dear blog followers, since I have recently had a birthday, I would like to have a hobbit birthday here on my blog and give you a present!
Several presents actually.
The first is for all of you. As a simple thank you for reading my blog, commenting on my random posts, and enduring my various musings on Tolkien, Lewis, fantasy, villains, and costumes, I’m posting a short story that you can read here: The Fiddler’s Tune.
The second gift is a giveaway! I’ve selected a few favorite books, and on this Hobbit birthday of mine, I would like to offer you a chance to read one of them!
Unfortunately, since I have not yet discovered a troll treasure trove or defeated a dragon and earned my fourteenth share of the treasure, not everyone will win a prize. But there will be three winners, and you all have an chance at being one of the lucky trio!
The prize? Each winner may choose one of the following books:
- On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (or another book from the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson: North! Or Be Eaten, The Monster in the Hollows)
- The Fiddler’s Gun or The Fiddler’s Green by A.S. Peterson
- One of Jill Williamson’s books: By Darkness Hid, To Darkness Fled, From Darkness Won, Replication, Captives, The New Recruit
- Failstate or Failstate: Legends by John W. Otte
- One of the Tales of Goldstone Woods books by Anne Elisabeth Stengl (Heartless, Veiled Rose, Moonblood, Starflower)
- Merlin’s Blade, by Robert Treskillard
Winners will be announced on the blog on Wednesday, April 24th! So be sure to check back then.

Aww, the US only part makes me sad, but I wish all your Americano enter-ees the best of luck! Those are some cracking prizes!
Hannah says
Oh, this is so sweet of you Gillian. A hobbit birthday! What a great idea!
I ought to do something like this on my blog come my birthday. :)
Hannah says
OOPS! Gillian, on the giveaway entry, I clicked the "I commented" before seeing what the question was! Could you tell me what it was?
Gillian Adams says
Hannah – It was to comment telling the most fun/craziest birthday present you've ever received. ;)
Charley – I know! I wanted to make it open to everyone, but couldn't manage it right now! :(
Hannah says
Hmm…Well, I'm not sure about what specific present would answer that question, but my big brother has made it a tradition to have a crazy, fun time finding my birthday present from him.
He sets up his Lego characters (That I know very well. A few are even my own.) around the house with little messages for me. I have to go on a huge scavenger hunt, figuring out the little clues and jokes along the way. It's so much fun!
By the way, Gillian, how would you share about this giveaway? Do I post a link on my blog, telling others what it's about?
Kaycee says
Oh my goodness, this is so weird that you should do a blog post like this! I just (literally, just, like four days ago) had my sixteenth b-day party which was a Hobbit party! It was the present my parents gave to me and it was AWESOME! All my friends dressed up, we ate Hobbit food, we set up a big table outside, and we gave away presents! So I guess that answers the question! :)
Thank you so much for doing this giveaway! How do I tell others about it? Should I put it on my blog? :)
Gillian Adams says
Kaycee and Hannah – Does it not say on there? Oops. I've never used rafflecopter for a giveaway before so I'm still trying to figure it out. Yes, to share about the giveaway you can post a link on your blog or something on facebook. Either one works!
Kaycee – You just had a hobbit birthday? That's awesome! What sort of hobbit food did you have? :) Mushrooms?
Kaycee says
Haha, I'm sorry, you DO have it on there! I hadn't clicked on the green button thingamajig before I asked…whoopsie! XD
We DID have mushrooms! XD My sister made cute little labels for all the different food. There was a vegetable plate which had mushrooms on it and she wrote "Farmer Maggots' NOT-stolen vegetables" as the label. I should just post some pictures on my blog about it…
BTW, I can't believe I forgot to do this in my last comment, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :) Also, congrats on your novel being published soon. (I read about it on Go Teen Writers…) That is so awesome!
Jenelle Leanne says
Craziest most fun birthday present I've ever received was my guitar!
Mary Ruth Pursselley says
Wow, Gillian, this is such a fun and cool idea! Makes me wish I'd thought of it first…
Anyway, I think the most fun or craziest birthday present I ever received was probably when my parents gave me and my brother a nine-week-old boxer puppy as a combined birthday present. She turned out to be the smartest dog we've ever had. Wish she was still with us.
Kara says
Happy Birthday Gillian and thanks for this great giveaway!! I definitely shared this on facebook, so generous of you :)
Craziest most fun gift I got for my birthday, getting blue highlights in my hair—that was cool! It was a few years ago and I kept singing, "32 and blue, oh yeah!"
Gillian Adams says
Thanks for the birthday wishes! :) Ooh. Fun birthday gift!
Molly says
Gillian, I just started following your awesome blog this morning. This is such a great idea! :)
The most fun gift I've ever gotten for my birthday? Well, my family is big on doing treasure hunts, so my friend Cole planned a surprise one for me (I was 8 I think) and I just loved it. :D
I will be storing away lots of useful tips from you to help my villains; they need work and your blog is just what I needed! As we say in our house, 'You da bomb!'
Gillian Adams says
Molly, so nice to meet you! Glad you're enjoying the Villainy 101 posts. I always have so much fun writing them. :)
Laura Elizabeth says
My parents got me a Kindle Fire for my birthday :D This birthday, actually. Best present ever, definitely!
Writer4Christ says
My flute was one of the best presents, a few years ago. :) I'm really excited for my birthday this year because I'm getting a small harp!
Laura Pol says
Wow my friend Kara just introduced me to your blog and I am so glad she did because it is AWESOME!!
Hmm my favorite birthday gift was getting a new (used) car on my 18th birthday! It was such a blessing!
Gillian Adams says
Laura, I'm so glad you stopped by! Always a pleasure to meet new people! :)
Kara says
*waving at Laura* isn't this the coolest blog??!! GREAT birthday gift, hugs to you my friend :)
Jojos Corner says
Craziest bday present? Does dinner at JOES Crab Shack where they made me hoopla-hoop in a red dress count?!?!
Not my fave bday ever…
Gillian Adams says
Oh my! Haha. I think that definitely counts! :D
Theodora says
I mentioned it on my blog. : )

Hmm… the craziest/funnest birthday present I ever received was… a stuffed chimpanzee I got as a kid. I carried that thing everywhere for practically five years.
Galadriel says
Best present I've gotten–well, recently, I'd have to say my 8×8 glass baking pan with a lid! It makes me so happy to use it.
Writer4Christ says
I mentioned it here.

Aww, that's so sweet of you to do a Hobbit Birthday giveaway!(I may have to adapt your idea later this year, I really like the idea!)
Hm… When I was turning 14(?) my friends took 14 boxes of various sizes and wrapped every one of them inside a bigger box with a little present in each layer. :) So it was this crazy unwrapping frenzy with boxes absolutely everywhere by the time I got to the last one. (A handmade bracelet) The gifts weren't anything spectacular or even slightly costly, but it didn't matter it was one of the best B-day presents!
Kay J. Fields says
Lovely idea, Gillian! We should have Hobbit birthdays more often, I think.
I posted an invite over at my own blog, link below:

Layla and Josiah says
Hey Gillian, I can't get the rafflecopter to work but I really want to enter- PLEASE Help!!!!!!!!!!
Layla.
Gillian Adams says
Okay, I've looked at the rafflecopter and can't see anything wrong with it. Why don't you try it one more time and then if it still won't work, leave a comment here telling me which entries you've earned and I'll add them manually!
Layla and Josiah says
That's the problem- I press on enter to win and it switches the computer position to the bottom of these comments, so I don't even know what I have to do. If this is to much of a hassle, don't worry, otherwise I thank you for the help:)
Layla.
Gillian Adams says
No problem, Layla! Instead of clicking on "enter to win" try clicking on the "easy entry for blog followers." You have to finish that first entry (following this blog) before you can see the others. After that there are a couple of other things you can do for more entries into the drawing!
Does that help?
Layla and Josiah says
I followed but it's still not showing me "easy entry for blog followers"???:( Thanks for being so patient with me, I know this is probably pretty irritating.
Layla.
Gillian Adams says
I'm so sorry it's not working for you. I went ahead and added your entries since you've followed the blog and commented on this post. So you are now in the giveaway! :)
If you would like to earn more entries, you can share about the giveaway link on facebook and earn another 2 entries. Or like my facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/gillianbronteadams for another 5 entries. The giveaway ends at midnight tonight!
Gillian Adams says
Oh and if you share the giveaway or like my facebook page, leave a comment letting me know, and I'll add those entries as well. :)
Sarah Elizabeth says
On my 13th birthday I received a Diamond Heart Necklace from my mother, alongside a beautifully handwritten note.
Lily J. says
Happy birthday, Gillian! I've never read The Hobbit (scandalous, I know) but it sounds like a fun birthday to have.
I think probably the weirdest thing I've ever gotten as a present was the big rock my grandmother gave me. I've had a thing for geology since I was two :) Oh, and my other grandma gave me a mini anvil to use in jewelry making. Not sure if that tops the rock or not.
