Gracious me! This is another tough one. There are so many options to choose from … And I thought this question would be easy.
First to come to mind were the Silmarils from Tolkien’s Silmarillion. But owning them never turned out well for anyone. It tended to end tragically. And what do I need with shining gems, even if they do contain the light of the two trees …
Next I thought of Fflewddur Flam’s harp from the Chronicles of Prydain. Until I recalled the fact that I am a storyteller … and storytellers are prone to embellishing the facts. The harp and I might not get along so well. I’m afraid it would be one series of broken strings after another.
So at last, I settled on King Mendenbar’s Sword from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I have always loved the way his sword is connected to the threads of magic woven through the Enchanted Forest. Other than its tendency to occasionally “leak magic,” I think it’d be a pretty handy magical object to have around.
Best stop there before I can think up a dozen more answers. :)
How about you? What magical object would you choose?
MaddieJ says
Oh my gosh, this one is hard…Definitely not Frodo's ring, haha. I think I would want Angela the Herbalists sword…I can't remember it's name right now, but it sounds really cool and its from the last Inheritance book. Although, I'd probably lose a limb with that…I want the Maruaders map! I solemnly swear that I am up to no good ;)
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Haha. Nope. Not the Ring of Power. :)
Ooh the Marauder's Map! Wish I'd thought of that one. Now that would be a handy thing to have around.
Sarah says
Hmm . . . choices, choices! First choice would be Excalibur from the Dragons in Our Midst series, but I'm not an heir of Arthur, so that's probably not a good choice. Maybe Galen's invisibility cloak? That would be cool, and something I could actually use.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
I can think of quite a few good uses for an invisibility cloak. But Excalibur would be pretty cool too.
Allison Ruvidich says
I am thinking the bells from Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy. Quite dangerous… but I've always loved music. : )
Gillian Bronte Adams says
I haven't heard of this before. What's the trilogy called?
Allison Ruvidich says
The Abhorsen Trilogy. The second book is Lirael; if you decide to read it, start with that one.
Jenelle Leanne says
Ahhh! All three items are from stories I love that very few other people seem to have read (at least, that I come across).
Hmmm… Susan's horn comes to mind as a useful item to have… as it brings help… but I don't think I get into a lot of situations where I need kings and queens to come to my rescue.
Harry Potter's invisibility cloak is pretty awesome. I think that would be highly useful.
Or maybe Abdullah's magic carpet from "Castle in the Air." Flying has always appealed to me.
Excellent thought-provoking question! :)
Sarah says
The only problem with Abdullah's carpet is what happens to it at the end. If it hadn't been for that, the carpet would've been one of my top choices.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
I thought about Susan's horn too … quite useful if you find yourself in a sticky situation.
When it comes to invisibility cloaks, I'm fairly certain Harry Potter's takes the cake. I'm not sure there's another invisibility cloak that quite compares with that one.
Jenelle Leanne says
Sarah… refresh my memory… what happens to it at the end? Agh, I can't remember!
Any magic carpet would do… I haven't read a lot of books with them in it. Aladdin's from the Disney movies would probably actually top my list… but I wasn't sure if movie items were allowed ;) hahaha

Considering the fact that adventures are often dangerous, I would want something like Lucy's Narnian fire-flower cordial.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Oh excellent choice! I feel like that's one magical object that would instantly guarantee you a spot on any quest or adventure you wished to join.
Sarah says
Ooh. That's an awesome choice.
Emily Kopf says
I think this is easier than the last one.
I would say, Owen's sword in the Wormlings Series. The flat of the blade can heal injuries and if you lose it for some reason, you can yell its name and it will come flying back to you. You just have to practice catching it.
My other choice would be a moonbeam cloak from the Dragonkeeper Chronicles. If you hold still, you are almost invisible–unnoticeable. And the pockets have unlimited space, as long as the objects fit through the hole.
Blue says
Oh! How could I have forgotten those! You are smart to remember those dual purpose items.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
My problem is that the more I think about it, the more "wonderful" answers I come up with! *sigh*
A boomerang sword? Yes, that could potentially be deadly. But useful once you got the hang of it!
Sarah says
How could I forget moonbeam cloaks? I'd take that over Galen's invisibility cloak. Infinitely more useful.
Does the Sword of the Wormling work for all people, though? Or just for Owen? Magical weapons often seem to be one-person-only.
Michaella Valkenaar says
I'd take Lucy's cordial or Harry Potter's cloak. Or maybe the phial of Galadrial–no more spiders in the shower.
Hannah says
Wow. I'm thinking and thinking, but I can't think of a magical item that wouldn't be extremely dangerous to me. I'll think some more…
Great choices, everyone!
Hannah says
Ooo, OOO! I would love to have the supplies Princess Addie from the Two Princesses of Bamarre. Seven League boots, a spy-glass, an invisiblity cloak, a food-supplying tablecloth…
That's a lot more than ONE, isn't it? Ah, well, maybe I'll just go with a cloak made by the elves.
AUGH! Scratch all of that! I would like the Phial of Galadriel filled with the light of Earendil, their most beloved star! That would be pretty useful…and just all around cool.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
I thought about the Phial of Galadriel too … that's a great one! :)
Bainespal says
As I commented on John Otte's parallel post, I pick the "elvish sword of great antiquity" from the old text adventure game Zork.
