I’m just a tad nervous about this question. It requires an earth shattering blend of colliding worlds, realms, cultures, and eras. Be prepared to stretch your imagination muscles. Stretching — it’s good for you, right?
Don’t think I can’t hear you groan! It’s actually a fun one to answer … I promise … until you wind up with double the correct amount on your list and have to start eliminating them. *shudders* Talk about painful.
Here’s the crack team I narrowed it down to in the end:
1. Kaladin
(Way of Kings, Brandon Sanderson)
He’d make a great leader for the Fellowship. He’s an expert spearman, knows how to motivate his followers, and cares for those under his charge, not to mention his training as a surgeon which lets him double as team medic!
2. Fflewddur Fflam
(Chronicles of Prydain, Lloyd Alexander)
Whether you’re in need of a companion to lighten the mood or fight like mad, Fflewddur Fflam would be an excellent choice. His harp provides an endless source of entertainment — both when he’s actually playing it and when the strings react to his flamboyant tongue and tendency to exaggerate.
3. Eanrin the Bard
(Tales of Goldstone Wood, Anne Elisabeth Stengl)
Because let’s just admit it, watching Fflewddur Fflam and Eanrin facing off would be hilarious! Not to mention the fact that both Eanrin the Bard and Eanrin the cat would be a tremendous asset to the quest.
4. Artham P. Wingeather/Peet the Sock Man
(Wingfeather Saga, Andrew Peterson)
Who could resist an offer of assistance from the winged Throne Warden of Anneira? And Peet the Sock Man is well worth his weight in a fight.
5. Waxillium Ladrian
(The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson)
Wax may be from a slightly different era than the others, but I feel like he could hold his own on the quest. (Especially if he’s allowed to time/realm travel with his Sterrion revolvers!)
6. Wayne
(The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson)
Wayne and Wax are a bit of a package deal. They work well together, and Wayne’s unique ability to disguise himself and become other people would be most useful!
7. Reepicheep
(Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis)
There are few knights I’d rather have by my side, than this noble knight of Narnia. Stalwart. Courageous. Faithful to the end. I’d trust Reepicheep to travel to Mount Doom and back with me.
8. Lochlan Stormgarden
(The Errant King, Wayne Thomas Batson)
Loch is just an interesting young character. He’s a bit impetuous, tends to shrink a bit from too much responsibility. But he’s highly talented and just the sort of fighter who would come in handy.
9. Taran Wanderer, Assistant Pig Keeper
(The Chronicles of Prydain, Lloyd Alexander)
Taran is a young fellow and he certainly has a lot to learn. But he’s a loyal companion and he has a stout heart.
How about you? Who would you select for your Fellowship of the Ring?
Hannah says
EEEEEEEEEK! I think this is the BEST question yet! I have to start coming up with my list. :D
No girls on your list, I notice.
*GASP* Fflewdduer Fflam and Eanrin! Would the laughter never end! And if that wasn't enough, Eanrin and Reepiceep! Cat and Mouse! OooooooooOOOOh.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Oh I didn't even think about that! That would be hilarious.
I know. I started off with a few, but in the end this was what I had to go with. Except I'm on there of course. I make the lucky tenth member of the Fellowship. Just don't tell Tolkien I did that! ;)
Hannah says
Okay…okay…I'm getting ideas.
Leader: Corlath (The Blue Sword) An experienced and deadly king of the desert with very unusual power. He is a natural commander and hard to faze. If he brought his horse along too, I would be happy.
Main Fighter: Etanun (The Tales of Goldstone Wood) Armed with Halisa, he's like, completely unstoppable. Also, a Faerie and the range of his powers is unknown.
Guide: Akilun (The Tales of Goldstone Wood) With the light of Asha in his hand, he can pierce any darkness. He is also a man of profound insight. Plus, Etanun and he are brothers and a team. Together, they're kind of unstoppable, but hey–nothing but the best for my team!
Fighter: Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender) Okay, okay, it was a TV series first, but it has turned into graphic novels, and Zuko is absolutely awesome. First and foremost, he's a firebender (no worries about cold winter nights), he's an expert swordsman, pretty good at stealth, and just a smart cookie.
Archer: Nock (The Door Within) This guy is such a good archer, he can make Legolas turn green (Book-wise). He's just awesome.
Fighter: Mallick (The Door Within) But what is Nock without Mallick? Though his complete opposite in both temper, bulk, and fighting (I think he has a huge hammer), they are best friends and an absolute hoot together!
Expert Thief and Spy: Eugenides (The Queen's Thief) When I saw this list, I KNEW that Eugenides MUST be on my list. He could steal anything I want, he can infiltrate and observe whatever base I want, and he's also a really, really good fighter, if it's an emergency (otherwise, he'll let everyone else do the fighting)
Fighter and Entertainer: Eanrin (Tales of Goldstone Wood) What would I do WITHOUT Eanrin? He's a Faerie, Bard, Knight, cat. And he is so funny, I think I would die to see how he interacts with everyone.
Healer and Confident: Imraldera (Tales of Goldstone Wood) I have to bring at least one girl along just in case I need her! I trust all these boys absolutely, but I wouldn't want to put them in an awkward situation. Imraldera is sweet, wise, gentle, and very brave. Plus, she could help keep Eanrin in line. :)
What a fun idea! I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Ooh! You do have a good team! :)
Sarah says
This is an absoballylutely awesome theme, and I love your list. I want to know what Artham Wingfeather would say about Bard Eanrin's poetry. And Hannah has an excellent point about Eanrin and Reepicheep. That would be interesting. :D
I'll be working on my list!
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Can't wait to see it!
Blue says
Before I plan my fellowship I must know: who is the ring bearer? (I hope it is not me, I have a tendency to lose things).
Gillian Bronte Adams says
You get to pick!
Blue says
Alright, let me see.
1) Wizard- Donita K. Paul's Fenworth
2) A king yet to reclaim his throne- Anne Elisabeth Stengl's Lionheart
3) Archer- C.S. Lewis' Queen Susan
4) Axe wielder- I don't know many, I'm afraid. I may have to cheat and include a character from my own writing. This might be good, since she is also a secret agent.
5) Warrior- C.S. Lewis' Trumpkin the dwarf
6) Comic relief- Anne Elisabeth Stengl's Prince Felix (Fenworth doubles as a comic relief as well)
7) Well, if I have Fenworth, I need Donita K. Paul's Librettowit, the librarian
8) Reliable companion- Anne Elisabeth Stengl's Beana
9) And for someone to be ring bearer, George Macdonald's Curdie, because he is trustworthy…he also spends a lot of his time in a tunnel.
I suppose I can tag along to be the historian, or something.
Sarah says
Great choices! I like that you included Curdie; I completely forgot about him.
Hannah says
Yeah, I realized too late that it was a Fellowship of THE RING, and I was like, "Oh." Which would make it a Fellowship of Ten, including me as ring-bearer. If you'd like to see how weird the Lord of the Rings story would go with me and my Fellowship, you can read my thoughts in the comments on the Fantasy Reflection Post I shared. :)
http://williamshsj.blogspot.com/2014/02/fantasy-reflections.html
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Yeah, I did the same thing. I thought about it right before I hit "post" and by then, I was already in love with my team as a whole so I didn't want to change it. We'll make the Fellowship of the Ring + one! :)
MaddieJ says
1. Murtagh- Inheritance
2. Peter Pevensie- The chronicles of Narnia
3. Achan Cham- The blood of kings trilogy
4. Hayden, from The Legend of Karac Tor.
5. F'ryan Cobblebay- Green Rider
6. The Lord dude from The Healers Apprentice.
7. Reepicheep- The chronicles of Narnia
8 &9. Um…Darren Fairbanks and Taren Marstha from my fantasy story XP
Hannah says
I absolutely knew Murtagh would be on your list. Let's hope he doesn't fall to the power of the Ring. ;)
Gillian Bronte Adams says
This looks like another good team. Peter was a runner up for mine, glad he's getting to go after all! ;)
Hannah says
All these crazy teams running around Middle-Earth saying, "No, I want to destroy the Ring!"
Jacinta s says
1. Aslan – Narnia – great leader and director!! Knows what to do in every situation.
2. Elsa – frozen – got all that cool ice power! Great protector!! As long as she contols herself!
3. Jack Frost – The Guardians(movie) – again got all that cool ice power!! The enemies will be over thrown by winter! (can you guess I`m Canadian!!!)
4. Kringle – Kringle – Another winter guy! Great companion! Magic is attracted to him! And he defeated a whole goblin army! Actually he does it every Christmas Eve.
5. Darsel – the circle series – great fighter!! Strong in every aspect.
6. Tasselholf – the Dragon Lance Series – great guide!! Fearless!! And very funny!!
7. Farmer Giles – Farmer Giles of Ham – humorous!! Got some skills and luck. Especially with dragons!!
8. Kristof – Frozen – Another winter guy! Sells ice for a living. Caring guy!! Thoughtful, cool personality!! Knows the wilderness and is tough.
And than me!! Another winter person. Living through minus thirty at the moment! lol.
Jacinta s says
I forgot there is actually nine companions. Let`s say…..I`ll add Puss and Boots to the fellowship. Just because I don`t think I could survive the mission without a pet! Plus he`s a super smart cat!!
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Thirty minus? Oh my word! I can't imagine! :)
So glad you picked Farmer Giles. He's another one who made it onto my first ridiculously long list. But he'd be a great one to have around. He's got loads of common sense and a grey mare with even more common sense than him.
Hannah says
Good ol' Farmer Giles. I read that short story last year sometime and was completely delighted with it. That grey mare! :D
Sarah says
Nice choices. :) Quite unusual.
Also, -30? Poor you!
Sarah says
So I'm kind of taking Hannah and Gillian's route with it being the Fellowship+One. Or just making my ideal Fellowship for any fantasy quest in general, because it would be a pretty similar team in any case. And yeah, this is late. Sorry. I had to work last night, so I couldn't finish it then.
1. Leader- Kalen (The Door Within). This was the hardest position to fill, as my top two candidates were in the original Fellowship. But of all my other possibilities, Kalen had best demonstrated his ability to lead in a similar situation to this, so I went with him.
2. Alastair Coldhollow (The Dark Sea Annals). As a former Wolfguard/assassin, Alastair is a highly skilled fighter. He could also probably serve as a substitute leader or guide if necessary. Just as long as he's off the Witchdrale or whatever that stuff was called.
3. Bard Eanrin (Tales of Goldstone Wood). Hannah and Gillian have pretty much summed it up already. Bard Eanrin is quite skilled, very funny, and would be helpful in a variety of situations.
4. Cruedwyn Creed (Legends of Karac Tor). Again, very skilled fighter, and would, along with Eanrin, help keep anyone from getting too miserable.
5. Will Treaty (Ranger's Apprentice). He's a very good archer (maybe not the best archer in the fantasy world, but still very good), and I'm sure his other Ranger skills would be useful too.
6. Kale Allerion (DragonKeeper Chronicles). Kale's wizard talents and her minor dragons would both be infinitely helpful. And, as Hannah pointed out, if I'm going on this quest, I need at least one female along too.
7. Bardon (DragonKeeper Chronicles). If Kale's coming, Bardon's an obvious choice. They are married. And he is a knight, so . . .
8. Bonnie Silver (Dragons in Our Midst and sequels). Bonnie would be my top choice for a Ringbearer, since none of the hobbits are an option. She's one of the few characters outside LOTR who I think could carry the Ring without succumbing to it. Ring aside, she can fly (always a plus), and has a good bit of experience with having to save the world.
9. Billy Bannister (Dragons In Our Midst and sequels). Like Kale and Bardon, Bonnie and Billy are kind of a package deal. Not that that's a bad thing . . .
And then I'd come along as . . . IDK. I'd find something to do. But I'm coming.
Sorry again for getting this in late, and thanks, Gillian, for these awesome questions.
Hannah says
What an awesome team! Wow, I have to read Door Within again. I don't even remember Kalen. Okay, I'm really going to have to read the Dark Sea Annuals, cause Allastair sounds awesome. Finally, I knew someone would have to bring along someone from Ranger's Apprentice. Oo, Bonnie would be perfect for the Ring! She's just so perfect. I forgot about her flying. That's useful.
Sarah says
I'm glad you think so! And yes, if you don't remember Kalen, you should definitely reread TDW. And you should read The Dark Sea Annals. (Preferably soon, because #3 comes out in fall, or it's supposed to.) And I'm glad you agree about Bonnie!
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Ooh Kalen would make a good leader, and Allastair would be super handy to have around. Sounds like another crack team to add to the list. :)
Captain Travis says
Wow, this really is a great challenge.
I'm going to cheat and borrow from science fiction to complete this:
1. Mr. Data, without emotions, would be the ultimate ring-bearer in my opinion. I think (though I'm not sure) that Sauron would have absolutely no effect on him. Plus Data would be awesome in fantasy battles and could indeed walk straight into Mordor where most morals could not…
2. If I'm going to pick Data, I have to second him with Geordi La Forge to make sure he is fully operational.
3. If Data being fully operational is key to the mission and Geordi is key to ensure that, I need a doctor along to ensure Geordi is in good health. Dr. Phlox is my actual favorite medical practitioner from the Star Trek universe, so I'd take him.
4. Aragorn still gets to lead the expedition. He's still the best and should not be replaced.
5. Legolas is awesome and needs to stay on the team. I created an elf character Lehkahn in my novel the Crystal Portal who is a better fighter but is not an archer. I'd pick him, except you probably don't know who he is…If you allow me to pick my own character, it would be Lehkahn other than Legolas.
6. Likewise Gimly. Though Trumpkin gets a bit of short-shrift in the movie Prince Caspian and would be every bit as good. If I picked Lehkahn for position 5, I'd need Trumpkin here because he is an archer as well as a swordsman. If I retained Legolas, I'd also keep Gimly…
7. Reepicheep would probably be my first choice from Narnia. But since you already picked him, I'll go with Puddleglum instead. Puddleglum, for entirely different reasons that Reepicheep, is his own brand of awesome. (By the way, I think picking Aslan would qualify as cheating, because you wouldn't need a team if you had Aslan, but otherwise I'd pick him.)
8. On second thought, I'm taking Reepicheep AND Puddleglum. It doesn't matter what you already picked. The dynamic would be so much fun. 7 is Puddleglum and 8 is Reepicheep.
9. Since I've already stolen from science fiction anyway, why not do so again? I'll take the doctor from Dr. Who as my quasi-wizard character…or wizard substitute in my case :)
Sarah says
I don't know a few of these characters, but the ones I do know sound like great choices! I'm especially glad you picked Puddleglum, who, I agree, is awesome.
Hannah says
I actually went on to write a short story about my characters all coming together as the Fellowship on my blog. Pretty silly. You can read it here if you want. :)
http://williamshsj.blogspot.com/2014/03/my-own-wacky-fellowship-of-ring_5.html
Gillian Bronte Adams says
That was awesome! Seriously, y'all, if you haven't read Hannah's short story about her Fellowship, you should! It's hilarious. You simply must go and check it out.
Sarah says
