The question: Is there a fantasy character that could serve as your double, either in personality, temperament, or appearance?
Evil twins. Doppelgangers. Clones. Kindred spirits. Any or all of the above would serve to answer this question.
This question does require a good bit of thought. I hesitate to put down the first answer that comes to mind, because – let’s be honest – this character is scads cooler than I am. We have some similarities, to be sure – personality and temperament. And I like to think that if I were to be written as a character, and painted with a very kindly brush of medieval epicness, we just might be mistaken for sisters, if not doubles.
Who is it, you ask?
I am talking of Eoywn, daughter of Eomund, Shield-Maiden of Rohan.
Sigh.
I knew I shouldn’t have said that out loud. Pray stop your snickering. Did no one tell you how rude that is? If nothing else, one can dream!
Michaella Valkenaar says
I am either Gren Fenny (Blood of Kings) or Rosy Cotton. I am just an ordinary peasant girl. I'm ginger-haired, "Merely pretty," short, and lacking epic courage. I could probably manage the Green Dragon, or find weapons for my brothers so they can drive Saruman out of our land. A good future for me would be to marry a godly man, have a bunch of kids, and grow a garden.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
I love this Michaella. Both Gren and Rosy may not have had the opportunity to display epic courage, but they had plenty of steadfast courage, and that's just as important! The courage to keep going, cheerfully, day after day, even when life throws the worst sort of difficult circumstances your way.
Sounds like a great happily ever after to me!
MaddieJ says
….Um….The only book character I can think of that is totally my clone is Jo March, followed up by Katniss Everdeen….but neither of them are fantasy…and for once my Murtagh fall back isn't working….So….Oh! I think I'll go with Rose from The Healers Apprentice. She doesn't look like me, but she writes stories, she's pretty much a regular girl, she's a romantic, she likes to climb trees ;) The fantasy me.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Jo March is a great one … if not quite fantasy, we'll let it slide! ;) But Katniss would definitely work. I forgot to add my disclaimer to this post! Oops. I call it Fantasy Reflections, because I love fantasy, but you can respond with characters or answers from any sort of speculative fiction, which includes dystopian!
MaddieJ says
Alrighty then! I'm Totally Katniss. She thinks just like I do. It was creepy reading it in the books 0.o
Tris from Divergent is also like me. I'm more shy and small, and we're both less bossy than Katniss.
Jacinta s says
Probobly Katnis Everdeen. Even though she isn't a fantasy character. Definetly my twin though!
Fantasy character would probobly be Eowyn. Same color hair, same independance. I'm always doing things with the guys, just like her!
Gillian Bronte Adams says
You can count Katniss! I said it in an earlier comment, but I forgot to add my disclaimer this time: Y'all can answer from any sort of speculative fiction novel–which would include dystopian. It doesn't have to be just fantasy. :)
Brooke Faulkner says
I would be Liz from the Book of Squires series. She hangs with the boys, is smart, and doesn't mind a little dirt and tumbling. :) But she still has some girl in her. Except for the fact that in the first book she didn't ride horses well. I'm in the middle of training two, so we're not the same there. And she doesn't look anything like me.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Love this: "Doesn't mind a little dirt and tumbling. But she still has some girl in her."
Charley Robson says
Ironically enough, I've another Tolkien comparison for myself – Turin Turambar, of "The Children of Hurin", and a short segment in "The Silmarillion". We share a lot of the same flaws and, while I'm not half as brave or capable of sending orcs running just by blowing raspberries at them, we have similar views on what's important to us; loyalty, courage, and not being afraid to push for change when we don't think something's being done right. Both of us react slightly less than favourably to high stress situations, too. And we'll both stab you very hard with a sharp thing if you wake us up unexpectedly in the dark.
… I cannot help but feel this does not bode well for my future.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Note to self: never accidentally wake Charley Robson up in the dark … unless wearing full body armor. Maybe an Iron Man suit. ;)
I do hope your future turns out somewhat better than Turin's. I daresay his tale was the first tale that ever reduced me to tears! But I love it all the same. It takes a truly brilliant author to accomplish that!
Charley Robson says
Indeed. I cried from about Chapter Nine onward. I shall endeavour not to stab anyone unexpectedly … or invade people's houses against their will … or annoy any dragons …
That can't be too hard, right? xD
Hannah says
ooooo….Hm. Sadly, I can't think of anyone.
I could see Eowyn as your twin! I think you two would have got along great!
Gillian Bronte Adams says
I guess Eanrin the Bard doesn't work as an answer for this one, does he? ;)
Hannah says
Oh, this opens up entirely new possibilities. If I had a guy twin (obviously not identical)…I must ponder this.
I'm flattered you considered Eanrin. Hehheh. Well, we certainly don't share anything in appearance and very little in personality, but I'm still amused.
Hannah says
All right, I think I have one. Lady Carliss from The Knights of Arrethtrae by Chuck Black. Granted, she's a bit tougher and quieter than me, plus she's amazing with a bow, but I think I would have been much like her in her shoes. She's quiet, well-versed in the ways of the King, fiercely loyal to her brother, family, and friends, and pretty friendly once she's over being shy. And I hope I can be as faithful as she when following the Prince!
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Haha, yeah, I honestly don't know how much you would be like Eanrin, but he has popped up in quite a few of these posts so far! ;)
Ooh, good one!
Jenelle Leanne says
Hmmm, that's a tough one.
Possibly Cimorene from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I've always thought that we were very alike in many ways. Very confident, comfortable with who we are, and not willing to conform to something just because "it's expected."
Of course, Kamarie is also my double, but I wrote her that way… so I don't know if she counts :) :)
I also feel rather a close kinship with Imraldera, we have the same sort of fiercely loyal streak. But I think she's way cooler than I am. And I would go nuts just transcribing other people's words… I'd rather compose my own.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Cimorene is one of my favorite characters. She's so practical, but in a fun, extremely clever sort of way. I just reread The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, after having last read them at least ten years ago. They had me splitting my sides with laughter. So great!
Sarah says
I'd actually say Una from Heartless for this. Una and I are both romantics with a tendency to daydream and a wish for adventure or at least a change from the ordinary. We both enjoy writing. (Una likes poetry; I tend more towards novels with some short stories and poems thrown in.) While I like to think I'm not quite as silly as Una, we both do have a tendency to say things not quite how we intended to and to get flustered rather easily.
So, yeah. Not the most flattering character, but . . . I like Una. And could be worse.
Hannah says
Una's a wonderful character! I'm sure I have much of her in me as well! Actually, she's probably another twin I could have. :)
Sarah says
Yeah, I like Una. Really like her. But I've heard a lot of people don't, for whatever reason.
Blue says
I have yet to find a character that looks like me, but I find a few who act and think like me.
One that comes to mind is Donita K. Paul's Librettowit the librarian. Like him, there is something in me that wants to go for an adventure….but I am too busy reading my books. Don't you dare interrupt me.
Brooke Faulkner says
I love Librettowit!! Especially when he and Fenworth fight. :)
Blue says
I often side with Librettowit.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
There's nothing worse than being interrupted in the middle of a scene! Growing up, I was notorious for walking around the house with my nose buried in a book when I was supposed to be doing my chores. That and keeping random books stashed all over the house so I could pick one up and keep going no matter where I was! ;)
Brooke Faulkner says
When they came back in the Dragons of Chiril I wanted to jump and hug them both. :)
Captain Travis says
Hmmm. This is tough. I'm not like anyone in the real world that I know of, yet alone a world of fantasy. I suppose the closest to me would be Flick Ohmsford from the Sword of Shannara. Known for a stocky build totally unlike his half-elf brother and a rather common background, Flick is not especially proficient in "heroic" skills, but has his own positive attributes, including unshakable loyalty, and finds over time he has courage and resourcefulness.
He's really quite like Samwise Gamgee, as the Sword of Shannara mirrored much of the Lord of the Rings. But Flick is human and I'm way to big to pass for a hobbit :)
Oh and I think it's not at all unfair to compare yourself to Eoywn, Gillian…
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Flick sounds like an intriguing character. I haven't read that series yet, but it's on my list.
Captain Travis says
The most common criticism of the Shannara series is that it's too much like Middle Earth and Lord of the Rings. It's true there are are huge number of parallels to the point it gets to be almost like a copy at times, but the Shannara stories have a few unique features that make them unlike LOTR and worth a read. I think you'll enjoy them–lots of epic battles :)
Emily Kopf says
I have never q.uite found my doppleganger, but I can see myself being Dame Imraldra. I'm rather quiet and would love to live in a library and spend my time reading, writing, and helping g people. I'm also the kind of person who would work myself into the ground helping people, tear the world apart to save my sister, and cry at the death of my worst enemy. Of course, you don't know for sure until you get there, and I haven't quite been in any of those situations (except the working myself too hard part, which I imagine Imraldra would do also).
Gillian Bronte Adams says
Imraldera is so cool. Starflower is my favorite book in the series … so far … and it's because of her. (And Eanrin too, of course.)
acceleratethejesusmovement says
Wow! Excellent question! I've never read a book and seen myself before, however, after some consideration, I have decided that Veronica from Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon would describe me pretty well, in personality. She stops at nothing when she sets her mind to something and never allows anyone to persuade her of what she knows is right. She follows her heart, even when her mind tells her otherwise. The only difference between us would be that I am by no means boy crazy……
Gillian Bronte Adams says
I guess I haven't ever really seen myself in a book before at first glance either. Guess it requires a bit more reflection than that.
Veronica sounds like an interesting character! I've hear a lot about Doon, but I haven't read it yet. *sigh* There simply are not enough hours in the day to accomplish all that must be done!
Allison Ruvidich says
On an honest reflection, I have to say Briony from Franny Bilingsley's "Chime". I don't know if you've read it. She's very tart, clever, and pretty– on the outside. On the inside she is as vain as a cat (I regret to say I follow her example), so much so that she holds herself responsible for things that… Well, I don't want to give spoilers. Also, she is extremely unromantic, which is myself in a nutshell.
Gillian Bronte Adams says
No, I haven't read it. Briony's a pretty name though! I like it. :)
ghost ryter says
Personality wise, I'm rather like Rosie from "Veiled Rose". (I only wish I shared her blissful ignorance of Algebra. *Shudder* I still have nightmares about it.)
Blue says
Rosie is a great character, she is one of my favourites . I see a wee bit of myself in her as well.
Madeline G. Wright says
There are so many that have pieces of me woven into them, but Seraphina, the title character by Rachel Hartman is my absolute TWIN. All of you must read that now! It's just beautiful.
