Fantasy Reflections: Gimmie the Grub

April 4, 2014 by Gillian Bronte Adams 25 Comments

I was supposed to have written this last night, only I was distracted by the incredible awesomeness of Captain America: Winter Soldier. sigh Such a good movie!

Anyway, our next fantasy reflection has to do with … you guessed it … food!

I know, I know. Not as earth-shatteringly difficult as some of the others we’ve answered. But it’s not a bad idea to give our brains a break every now and then and just have fun!

And this isn’t actually quite as easy as it looks. I mean, anyone who’s ever read the Redwall books with all of their mouthwatering feasts–the critters of Redwall are the only questers who ever feast like kings while journeying in the wild–knows how difficult this could be.

I will have to go with lembas. Ever since the first time I read Lord of the Rings, I’ve been dying to try just a mouthful. That or the fruit from “inside” the stable in The Last Battle. Can you imagine?

How about you? What food would you want to try?

As always, answer in the comments! Feel free to copy the picture and paste it into your blog to continue the discussion elsewhere. I ask only that you link back to this original post!

Lembas, hands down. Maybe with some cram for comparison.

Oh yes, that's still one of my favorite Gimli scenes in the book! ;)

Sometimes I wonder what Digory and Polly's toffee tree fruit tastes like. But if I was going to be on some long journey I would want lembas, or Gurgi's bag of fruit and nuts.

Just came back from watching it. Wow. Just Wow. So intense, so awesome, so heart-wrenching. I loved it. The Winter Solider…gah…he reminded me so much of one of my story characters. Oooog, I'm ready for the rest of the story. Just so long as its good. :)

I've always wanted to taste strawberry fizz, from the Redwall series. It sounds like it would taste wonderful, like a cup of summer. :)

Me too! Now that you mention it, I actually have a Redwall cookbook … pretty sure it has a recipe for strawberry fizz too.

I've seen the recipe but I just can't get myself to make it. I think that how it actually tastes in real life, could never be half as good as my imagination has fantasized it would be.

I'd like to drink the water near Aslan's Country in the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Water that fulfilled both hunger and thirst, and looked like shining light…

I'm curious about the food from Gurgi's magic wallet (Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Cycle). Supposedly, the food got tiresome after a while because of its magic-tainted flavor. What, I wonder, does magic taste like?

And yes, I'm curious about both lembas and the toffee tree too! Oh yes, and the forbidden fruit that Jadis ate in the garden in The Magician's Nephew.

I just started rereading the Chronicles of Prydain! Love those books so much. Gurgi is one of my favorite characters … along with Taran and Eilonwy and Fflewddur Fflam!

I'm so glad you're reading the Prydain stories. Fflewddur and Gurgi are my favorite characters in the series, although each character is very memorable. After C. S. Lewis, Lloyd Alexander is my favorite author.

Gah, so hard to choose! There's a lot of foods I'd like to try . . . I guess, though, that I'd pick strawberry fizz from Redwall, or else the toffee-fruit from The Magician's Nephew.

Oh yes. I think Redwall may have the monopoly in the fantasy foods industry! There's skilly and duff and the otter's hotroot soup and a gazillion other things I'd love to sample.
