Book Beginnings

September 16, 2015 by Gillian Bronte Adams 21 Comments

book beginningsThere is something beautiful and terrifying about a blank page. Endless possibilities. A thousand worlds, lives, and actions lie at your fingertips. But as soon you set down that first word – or that first letter of the first word – you have limited your possibilities. Before, the sky was the limit. And after? The limit resides in whatever muddled mess your highly caffeinated brain can concoct.

If you’ve been around the writing or reading game for any length of time, you will know that first lines are terribly (an wonderfully) important. Have you ever picked a book up in a bookstore, flipped open to the first page, and then bought the book based on the first lines alone?

I know I have.

But in my opinion, it’s not only the first lines of the book, but the first lines of each chapter and scene that can help make or break your novel. Coming up with so many eye-catching first lines can be daunting, to say the least. I’m currently diving into the first draft of Book Three in the Songkeeper Chronicles – at the moment, I’m somewhere in between the two stages of #firstdraftwoes and #firstdraftbliss – and the more I’ve been playing around with my beginning, the more it seems like all the excellent first lines are already taken!

Let me throw a few attempts your way, and you’ll see what I mean.

In a hole in the ground there lived a Songkeeper.

Granted, this takes the story in a slightly different direction than I was originally intending… but there’s just something about this line that reads “classic.” Don’t you agree?

Once there were four children whose names were Ky, Cade, Paddy, and Meli.

“Once” sounds rather fairytale-ish. It just doesn’t set the right tone for this story. And for some reason, I keep picturing lions, witches, and wardrobes … Not to mention a faun and a lamp post. Not sure what’s up with that.

Amos was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that … Old Amos was as dead as a doornail.

Oh dear, spoiler alert! Can’t believe I let that one slip … Just kidding! You can hold onto your knives, stow your daggers, and dispose of all that rotten fruit you were about to send my way. Once again though, the voice is just not quite right for the Songkeeper Chronicles. Though it is certainly eye catching …

(Did I say I was just kidding?)

Ky wanted to make a sword; but Cade, charged with the practical side of his education, decided on horseshoes.

Oddly enough, this one almost fits with the characters in question. Except backwards. Cade being the son of a swordsmith and all … and Ky being the more practical one.

Well, as you can see, I’m stumped. Any lovely (false) book beginnings you would care to suggest for the start of Book Three of the Songkeeper Chronicles? Top points to anyone who can correctly quote the first lines I mentioned above!

Very tongue in cheek, yours most (in)sincerely,

A Change of Pace

August 12, 2015 by Gillian Bronte Adams 3 Comments

Things have been a bit quiet on here lately, but I do swear that it’s not because I’ve simply been slacking off. Life is busy as ever, and sometimes I think I trip over my own feet as I try to keep up with the hectic pace. Sometimes I joke that I like to disappear from the internet for indeterminate periods of time in order to appear mysterious.

No doubt you’ve all been wondering what I’ve been up to, right? I can hear the guesses now. Portal hopping? Time traveling? Simply undercover as a top secret agent in some foreign country?

Well since I don’t like to keep you all guessing for too long, I decided it was high time I popped over here to let you in on a bit of what I’ve been up to.

New Stuff

First things first: we have a new site! What do you think? For the past four years, I’ve been running a separate website and blog, and I decided it was high time to merge the two and save myself a bit of trouble! Not that merging the two wasn’t an incredible amount of work, but I have the brilliant Brynne Delerson of The Gathered Home to thank for that. (Not only is she an amazing writer and vastly creative DIYer – that is a word, right? – she’s also my amazingly talented sister!)

Now bear in mind that things are still in the works. Apparently merging Blogger and WordPress tends to leave a few formatting errors, so please suffer with me as I continue to work through all my old posts and try to straighten things out over the next few weeks. Over all though, I am more than happy with the change!

Technical Stuff

I love all of you amazing followers and would hate to lose any of you with this switchover, but a lot of this technical jargon is completely beyond me, so hopefully I can explain it in a way that doesn’t leave you even more lost. First off, if you have been following Of Battles, Dragons, and Swords of Adamant through Google Friend Connect, know that my posts will no longer show up in your feed.

If this is a problem for you – i.e. you love Of Battles, Dragons, and Swords of Adamant and you can’t imagine life without these posts, which is all of you, right? – you will want to subscribe via email or through a site like Bloglovin’. If you have already followed this blog through Bloglovin’ or a similar site, you may still need to update the site information in your RSS feed reader to gillianbronteadams.com/feed.

Whew. Are you lost yet? Still with me? Then it’s time for the fun stuff!

Fun Stuff

I just returned from an amazing weekend at the Realm Makers conference in St. Louis. If you haven’t heard about it before, Realm Makers is a conference designed for Christian writers of science fiction and fantasy.

I have a strange camera phobia so I didn’t personally take any pictures, but here’s a group shot of all the Enclave authors who were at the conference. Some of the coolest people I’ve met. Seriously though, isn’t that a great crew?

IMG_5110

While the sessions and speakers were all great, I would have to say that my favorite part of the weekend was the chance to fellowship with other speculative fiction writers. It felt more like a ginormous family reunion than anything else. Complete with an epic Nerf war/zombie apocalypse at the end. Can’t get much cooler than that.

Up and Coming Stuff

Expect things to get back on track here on the blog over the next few weeks. Life never completely slows down, but there are seasons where it is slower than others, so you can be looking forward to once again enjoying all those giveaways, blog posts, and story installments that you’ve been waiting for the past months! And to those of you who have stuck around through the silence, I think you’re just swell!

If you’re reeling from the vast amount of awesomeness packed into the title of this post, don’t worry! It’s completely understandable. I’ve been reeling since Out of Darkness Rising came out yesterday. I am just that excited for the chance to share this story with you. This moment has been a grand total of five years in the making. The first four years dragged on like a horse slogging through knee-deep mud, but the past twelve months have been so intense, hectic, and action-packed, that this day was nearly lost in the middle of it. So I am forcing myself to slow down and step back to enjoy this moment.

As a part of the celebration, there are two things I want to share with you: an Amazon Blitz and a medieval themed Out of Darkness Rising launch giveaway. You can earn extra entries for the latter with the first so this is one instance where you’ll want to read through the terms and conditions (like Bilbo) and not simply skip all the way to the rewards section at the end. Out of Darkness Rising Announcement and Giveaway

January 30, 2015 by Gillian Bronte Adams 76 Comments

It is with great excitement that I can finally announce the upcoming release of another book! Mark your calendars, my dears.

Out of Darkness Rising comes March 15th!

 (Houston, we have a date.)

This book has been a long time in the making. I cut my writing teeth on it way back in the day. It began as a short story. The short story became a novella. The novella found a publisher, and now, a good many years later, you will be able to read it in just a month and a half.

To say I’m over the moon would be a slight understatement!

In the meantime, scroll down to feast your eyes on this beautiful cover, watch the book trailer, enter the giveaway for a chance to win a copy, and enjoy the rest of the goodies below …

OODR Front Cover

 Darkness reigns unchallenged.

For the villagers on the accursed Island, life has only one meaning – death.  Bound to the Island by the curse, the villagers suffer beneath the iron claw of the Serpent, daily breathing the poison of his breath and dying to appease his insatiable appetite.

When Marya’s parents are slain by the Serpent for their belief in a legendary king, she becomes an Outcast.  Struggling to survive and avoid the vengeance of the Tribunal, Marya is torn between legend and the harsh reality of the Island.  Yet when a forgotten promise springs to life, she cannot help wondering if the old stories might in fact be true.  And if they are, will the promise prove stronger than the curse?

I Always Thought I Was Ready to Die …

January 8, 2015 by Gillian Bronte Adams 18 Comments

I thought I was ready to die 2

As promised, musings inspired by reading A Time to Die by Nadine Brandes: I always thought I was ready to die.

I cringe as I say it, because now it strikes me as a terribly arrogant thing to say. Growing up, I was convinced that something bad was going to happen to me at some point in my life. I was going to go blind, I was going to get diagnosed with an incurable disease, I was going to fight an epic battle against orcs and die trying to save my comrades … Okay, so maybe not the last one.

I’ll admit it sounds kinda weird and just a little silly. Don’t ask me why I was convinced, I just was. It’s not that I was fascinated with suffering or wanted to die or anything like that, but I knew even then that there were things I was willing to give my life for, and I thought that somehow God would give me joy in the midst of suffering. And by George, I thought I was ready. (Those of you who are a mite older and wiser are already shaking your heads at me.)

Some of y’all know that I was in a pretty rough car accident this past summer—you can read a little bit about it here, though I was on pretty strong pain meds when I wrote that post, so … be forewarned. Once the adrenaline started to wear off, and I emerged from the first of several surgeries, I remember laying in a hospital bed, replaying the accident over and over, recalling every thought, every feeling, every moment of fear, and realizing that it was only by God’s grace I had survived.

I could have died. Just like that.

And that thought just about knocked me down and stole the breath from my lungs. I was horrified to discover that I wasn’t quite as ready to die and trade this earthly life for a heavenly existence as I’d hoped and imagined. It wasn’t that I was afraid of dying in and of itself. In Christ I know that I have an eternal hope that lasts beyond the grave, and nothing can take that hope from me. It was the quickness of it. It was the knowledge that my life could have been snuffed out in a split second. And it was the fear that at the end of the day the full sum and total of my time on this earth amounted to very little.

It was the realization that I have squandered so much of the time I have been given. So many hours poured into entertainment, wasted on my own desires, spilt in selfishness. Too often we put off the things we know we should be doing so we can enjoy ourselves now, imagining that there will be time enough to deal with them later. It was the knowledge that I hadn’t yet lived to the fullest the life I wanted to live for Christ on earth before being called home.

To me, it was a stunning revelation and a heartbreaking one.

I read A Time to Die by Nadine Brandes a few months after my car accident and found it extremely thought provoking in light of my recent awakening. If you’re not familiar with the story, Parvin Blackwater lives in a world where everyone has a clock that counts down the time until their death. With one year left to live, Parvin believes she has wasted her life and sets out to live her final days with meaning and purpose. Unlike Parvin, I don’t know how many hours remain in my life, nor how many days or months or years … nor would I want to. But I do know that I don’t want to waste the time allotted to me. I don’t want to face my death with the same feelings of time wasted and hours misspent.

When all is said and done, I know it is not what I have done but what Christ has done for me. But I also know that the time I have been given is a gift and each breath I draw comes from His hand, and I sure don’t want to waste it. It is far too easy to live only for the here and now. It is far too easy to revel in the momentary pleasures. It is far more difficult to live a life of meaning and purpose. A life dedicated to something greater, to bringing glory to the One who created us. But when the hour of my death comes, the words I desire above all else to hear are “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

“All my life I’ve wondered what my purpose is. Today, I realize with a twist in my gut, that all my wondering and waiting hindered me from seeking a purpose. I could have done so much more if I’d braved intentionality sooner.” – A Time to Die, Nadine Brandes

How about you? How do you want to live your life?
