CSFF Blog Tour – Corus the Champion Day 3
Yesterday, in mentioning briefly some of the parallels between D. Barkley Briggs’ Legends of Karac Tor series and Lloyd Allexander’s Chronicles of Prydain, I was struck with the apparent similarities between two key characters – Fflewddur Fflam and Cruedwyn Creed.
The lines are set.
[Editor’s note: If you’re interested in reading more about Cruedwyn Creed and Fflewddur Fflam, check out D. Barkley Brigg’s post on the matter: A Character Named Creed]

From inside the cauldron arose a crumbling beast of earth and bone. It was man-shaped, but faceless, bulging with nondescript features. It had a rough outline of head, torso, arms, legs. A cavity of ribs was clearly visible along its midsection. Lurching to its feet, dripping mud, it showed a gaping maw and a jagged mess of copper nails for teeth. A noise came from its mouth, a sound like the movement of wind through winter-crusted leaves – a gasping, nothing sound. The beast stood eight feet tall, looked as thick as a tree. It had no eyes. The other fascinating creatures and characters of Karac Tor that we do not have time to explore include the gnomes, bird men, and the horrendously evil Horned Lord. To find out more about them, I suppose you will have to read the book!

The author, however, often relied on narrative and telling to inform the reader about each of his characters. I noticed this most frequently in the beginning of the book. It is tempting to explain characters to the reader, but I found that the author’s voice interjected into the natural flow of the manuscript jarred me from the story like hitting a rock in the middle of a stream. By the end of the book, this telling tendency seemed to fade a bit and I was drawn into the story so that I did not notice it as much.

In conjunction with the CSFF Blog Tour, I received a free copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review.

Returning to Haiti
Last January, I had the chance to go on a mission’s trip to Haiti! My team went to continue work on the first Christian youth camp in Haiti – Jacob’s Well. The trip was amazing! I posted a daily travel log on my other blog Stars in the Universe after I got back.
Haitian campers listening to the Gospel in Creole! |
Well, this year, I get to go back!
I’m a part of a team of about 26 from Frontier Camp – a Christian youth camp in East Texas where I’ve been working for the past 5 summers. Frontier Camp has been partnering with a Haitian pastor, Gersan Valcin, for the past six years to start Jacob’s Well!
A huge percentage of the population in Haiti is under the age of 14 so this is a country where youth outreach can have a great impact! It’s been amazing to see and hear about the change that the youth camp has already made in its village.
I’m so excited to go back! I’ll be leaving January 3rd and coming back ten days later! It’ll be amazing to see what God does in those 10 days – in my life, in the lives of the other team members, and in the lives of all those we meet in Haiti!
While we’re down there, we will continue construction/work projects at the camp and run day and overnight camps for the village children. During those camp days, the children will have the opportunity to participate in safe and fun activities (like games, archery, crafts, etc.), as well as watch Bible Dramas, and learn about the Gospel.
I ask for your prayer for the team as we prepare to go, for our missionary friends the Valcins and the Vaughns who are currently serving in Haiti, for the Haitian people and all of the children who will be attending the camp!
“Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14
Clones, & Stars
Clones
In my “spare time” this fall, I had the opportunity to help Jill Williamson, author of the Blood of Kings Series, with a book trailer for her upcoming book Replication! It was quite fun and definitely piqued my interest in the book. I’m super excited about it and can’t wait to read it now!
Here’s the book blurb from Jill Williamson’s website:
Someone is covering up multiple secrets…
Martyr—otherwise known as Jason 3:3—is one of hundreds of clones kept in a remote facility called Jason Farms. Told that he has been created to save humanity, Martyr has just one wish before he is scheduled to “expire” in less than a month. To see the sky.
Abby Goyer may have just moved to Alaska, but she has a feeling something strange is going on at the farm where her father works. But even this smart, confident girl could never have imagined what lies beneath a simple barn. Or what would happen when a mysterious boy shows up at her door, asking about the stars.
There are two trailers – one from Abby’s perspective and one from Martyr’s.
You can also see the videos on Jill’s website here.
Prizes include: a brand new Amazon kindle, your very own star named after you (fascinating, right?), ebook downloads, and the chance to become a Books-for-Life Guild Member and receive a free signed copy of every book he writes! Very nice!

The Errant King is the second book in the Dark Sea Annals Series. A while back, I wrote a review of the first book Sword in the Stars. Here’s a link to the review if you care to read it: Sword in the Stars Review!
As far as my own writing goes, I’m still plugging away and waiting until the end of the semester to gain some real headway!
