Today for the March Characters in Costume Challenge, we’re focusing on character accessories and answering the following question:
What is one item/object/accessory that your character is likely to have on or about them at all times?
For my character, I chose Ceridwen (or Gwen) from a current WIP titled The Epic of Aedonia. You met Gwen last month during the February costume challenge.
Gwen’s accessory is a necklace bearing the symbol of the Cuirach, the flaming star of Aedonia. It belonged to the mother she never knew, and was given to Gwen by her father on her tenth birthday.
It hangs from a simple yet sturdy chain about her neck, and she never takes it off, not even while riding into battle. The Cuirach itself is a symbol to all of Aedonia. The blazing red star rides high in the night sky and symbolizes hope and freedom for all and the eternal promises of Aeon.
For Gwen the necklace bears double meaning, representing both the parents she lost and a hope that endures against all odds. She often fingers it unconsciously before riding into battle or dealing with the problems of command.
Thus as Gwen symbolizes hope for her people, the necklace becomes a symbol for her and inspires her to continue fighting even when all hope is lost.
Who knew a necklace could be so important, right?
